UA is one of Portugal’s 14 public universities. Founded in 1973, has grown into a successful, dynamic and competitive institution. Integrated in the community and region, has a strong research dimension and offers a wide range of educational programmes, from post-secondary vocational to doctoral programmes.
Committed from the start to innovation, quality and the attainment of national and international recognition in the pillars of Education, Research and Cooperation with Society, UA has built a profile based on sciences and technology and on pioneering areas.
Research is organised in several areas through a network of 14 Research Units (RU) and 4 Associated Laboratories, within the centrally-managed Research Institute. These areas are: Science and engineering of materials; Telecommunications; Environmental and Geo sciences; Teaching/educational sciences; Organic chemistry/agro-food; Social Sciences and Arts.
Research activities are managed on a multi-disciplinary and inter-departmental basis or around specific programmes and projects, in order to take advantage of the synergies and articulations between different areas. As a consequence of strategic options the quality of the research produced has been confirmed by the results of successive evaluations carried out by FCT (in 2008, 77% of the RU achieved Excellent or Very Good). Inter-institutional and international cooperation are priorities. Doctoral programmes have been launched together with other universities.
